Around 180 delegates converged on the International Conference Centre in Abuja (ICC), over the 11th and 12th of July, to attend the 2nd Annual Nigerian International GSM Strategic Conference organised under the auspices of the GSM Operators Association of Nigeria. They included representatives of the Ministry for Communications, the Nigerian Communications Commission, the West African Telecommunications Regulators Assembly, the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria, GSM and CDMA Operators, Tier 1. Supply Companies, Financial and Legal Experts and other such stake holders.
The conference, which was sub-titled “The Future of GSM in Nigeria: Creating the Correct Paradigm to Support the Next 20 Million Subscribers”, featured a diversity of subject matter within this context delivered by a broad range of acknowledged industry experts. Technology showcases covering next-generation networks, environmentally friendly network solutions, satellite (NIGCOMSAT), HSPA, WiMax, CDMA and WCDMA, blended with financial concepts and government and administrative perspectives, resulting in a well-rounded overview of the Nigerian GSM situation at this all important stage of its evolution. |

The Nigerian GSM sector seems set to enter what is arguably the most challenging period since its inception. The advent of the Unified Licensing Regime, new operators poised to enter the frame and news headlines dominated by quality of service issues at a time when new subscribers are added daily at a rate unequalled anywhere in the world, further burdening the capability of the networks, are the dynamics that will define the industry’s direction in the immediate future. It is the sincere hope of the GSM Operators Association of Nigeria that a degree of clarity was injected into some of these issues by way of the 2nd Annual Nigerian International GSM Strategic Conference. We thank everyone involved and look forward to working with you again in the not too distant future. |
